City Speculations investigates the representation of urban space through a collection of essays and projects that explore new modes of representing city life. Essays by Phillips and M. Christine Boyer delve into one of the most successful attractions of the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, The Panorama of the City of New York, installed in the New York City Pavilion (now the Queens Museum). The brainchild of “master builder” Robert Moses, The Panorama simulated a helicopter tour of New York City during the course of the Fair, with the ultimate goal of using the map as a tool for urban planning and an educational resource. Following the complete update of The Panorama completed in 1994, and the installation of a new ramp for viewing the object in-the-round in 1989, this book features artists in conversation with urban design, infrastructure, and representation.
